Welcome!!

Right, so what started out back in 2011 having just joined the gym and found out that not only was I 20kg overweight, but that my body fat was disgustingly high, is evolving! This blog is a reflection of my journey to a state of better health, vastly improved self confidence and hopefully a far more energetic me! It is also a place where I can ramble on about whatever takes my fancy. I cannot promise to write well, but I do promise to be honest in my ramblings.

One of my best finds of 2014....

Now you may or may not know, but I am a creative soul and I have a need to make things, write about things, paint things....well you get my drift!

Builders Warehouse was having this huge promotion on paint products and I found something called Fired Earth chalk paint and soft wax.  Well it's been almost life-changing!  After visiting Kol Kol (www.kolkol.co.za) and getting loads of inspiration I made the decision that I will upcycle, recycle, reuse and make whatever it is I happen to want and need!  Add chalk paint into the mix, and you have it waxed!  Ok, that was a bit lame.... sorry!

The colour I chose - Chateau Moss - is a sort of khaki colour.  I absolutely love it but I am definitely going back for at least another two colours!

There are a few things I love about this product:  It can be used on practically any surface and no real preparation is required, it is water soluble so no hassle cleaning the brushes, it is so easy to work with and dries quickly and you can get really creative with the effects using one or two coats, distressing the finish or not, waxing or not.  The waxing gives it a good seal and deepens the colour.

I've had great fun and have already completed numerous projects, from metal tables, to clay items that I made, to restoring an imbuia table and a picture frame.  The imbuia table was my first project.  It was a broken table I'd had lying in storage for as long as I can remember.  I drilled out the broken off bits, put in a piece of dowel, gave the top a sanding as it was in quite bad condition, and then taped off what I didn't want to paint with narrow masking tape (R5 at the local chinese store!).  I gave the two shelves two coats, aged it a bit along the edges, and then waxed it.  I left it overnight and then buffed it up.  Not bad for a first project!

Although it seems to be more popular to leave the top natural wood and paint the legs, because the legs were in a good condition, but the top was a little worse for wear, I decided to do it the other way around.

Do yourself a favour, go and grab a tin of chalk paint and a tin of wax and have some fun.  Paint a few of your plant pots, or paint a few old glass bottles...really just go and have fun!

New Year's Resolutions? Nah...I don't think so!

Yip, in just five sleeps, we'll be entering a sparkly, shiny, brand new year!  That time where people make all sorts of promises to themselves about what they will and won't be doing next year.  Do I make resolutions? No!  Been there, done that and I find that I feel awfully let down by myself if I don't achieve my goals.  So what's the problem?  Am I just a slacker?  No. I think I set the standard impossibly high, surely leading to failure.  I've been far too unrealistic in my goal-setting in the past and there is nothing like a sense of failure to dampen the spirits and destroy self-confidence!  One year I just decided that enough is enough - no more resolutions.  I quit being so hard on myself!

I get quite philosophical at this time of year, looking back to see what I have achieved, where I need to improve, what plans I need to set into place for the next year or two and how I am going to achieve my goals.  Now, I sort of sit down and do a five-year forecast.  I write down where I'd like to be in five years on the health front, the work front, the home front, etc.  Then I realistically break it down into years and then further into doable chunks.  I also leave room for unforeseen obstacles along my path so that I can kinda roll with the punches so to speak.  I seldom attain all my goals, but have quit beating myself up about and choosing rather to focus what I have achieved.  Life is unpredictable after all.

So on the 31st I plan to kiss 2014 goodbye graciously and be thankful for the lessons learnt, and welcome 2015 with arms wide open!  In this new year I plan to look after myself, dance as often as I can, try new things, eat good food, drink good wine, have a positive outlook, continue seeing the good in everyone and everything (yes I know, I am naive, but I like my little world!), work hard, stress less, laugh more, write much more and sleep well!

What are your plans for the next few years?

The Festive Season??

Each year I find myself saying the same thing.  I seem to threaten all and sundry, and in particular the very Universe itself, that I am going to save my annual leave, take all 20 working days over the "festive season" next year, rent a little cottage in the Karoo and spend the days in the plaasdam with a cold ale and the nights in front of a log fire indoors.  I will not have to communicate much with humans for four weeks!!!  Unfortunately next year is yet to come.  Now I'm sure some of you are making big rolling eyes and sighing and failing to comprehend why I don't just love this time of the year....I mean it IS the festive season.

Let me attempt to present my case.  We live our lives by time....day by day, weekend to weekend, month by month and then during the last couple of months of the year...there is this buildup to the Festive Season.  By that stage of the year I am pretty exhausted from putting heart and soul into my job, family and life in general.  I'm not really in the right frame of mind to be all excited and energised.  Then there is the budget....now I am really proud to say that I work with a pretty tight budget...and survive!  However, although the children's education is paid, my home loan is paid and none of us go hungry, there just isn't enough in my budget for things like holidays and lots of gifts.  Then there is the pressure from society that everyone should be really excited and happy that Christmas is coming.  But that same society has created a commercial circus around Christmas.  What is Christmas again?  I know a lot of people who suffer from depression at this time of the year.  It's a really difficult time for a lot of people.  The pressure to be happy seems to accentuate their depression.  It's not cool!

Oh then we have the Christmassy music in ALL the shops...starting sometime after July it seems!  As soon as the calendar strikes 1 December, people lose all sense of reason, manners, respect and fear when they get behind the wheel of a vehicle.  What's with that? And while we're asking questions, what's with all the food?  For what reason do people feel the need to consume quadruple the normal amount of food, feel awful afterwards and proceed to swear never to eat so much again in their lives.  I just find the whole time rather difficult to bear.

A chap really annoyed me today.  This is a really nice guy who works at the hospital in the sanitation department.  I see him every day and he removes all our recycling and other waste from the offices each day. I went so far as to organise an awesome cake for him some time back.  However, in the last week he has cooked his goose/turkey so to speak.  He came to me last week and asked for a "Krismis boks".  Immediately I was highly annoyed.  You just don't ask for money.  It's just not right.  I sort of evaded the subject.  Today he was back again wishing us all a Merry Christmas.  I wished him back and then he asked me if he must now leave empty-handed.  I told him that the one boss had already give him extra and that I did not have anything to give him.  He threw a bit of attitude my way and said that's fine, he will just treat us next year, the way we've treated him now and he stormed off.  Well I was horrified.

I ask you, is this the Festive Season?  Is this what Christmas is all about?

That said, I have to say there are people I know who really celebrate the birth of Christ.  For them it's a deeply spiritual holiday and whatever they do is in His honour.  I have no problem with that.  To those of you to whom Christmas has true meaning, may I wish you a very merry one....and while I'm at it....may all of you enjoy good health, prosperity and happiness in 2015.  Can't wait to get my new year's groove on....it's going to be an epic year, and there is always the possibility of a Karoo holiday at the end of it!

Clifton ...just a magical place!

I'm sure we're all in agreement that Cape Town, our Mother City, is just the best city in the whole wide world.  Not only is it beautiful, but it's got such a friendly population and the list of things to do is endless.  It has the natural beauty of Table Mountain, may I remind you one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the ocean, world-famous beaches, a cooking night-life and the most awesome shops, museums, restaurants, etc, etc.

Clifton is in a protected little spot where the wind just can't seem to get to...and trust me, it really tries!!  Taking a weekend or even, being totally decadent, a whole week to unwind and recharge in Clifton is just such soul therapy.  It's right on two bus routes, the MyCiti transport system (www.myciti.org.za) as well as the City Sightseeing bus route (www.citysightseeing.co.za).  It's a short taxi ride in one direction to the V & A Waterfront or the city centre and in the other direction you find Camps Bay, Hout Bay and along the route, the Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa....wonderful to sit on their deck and watch as the sun dips down into the ocean (www.12apostleshotel.com).

There is a holiday apartment on Clifton Steps - 50 steps down from the road and 150 steps up from those stunning Clifton beaches.  Did I mention that the wind really battles to find it's way to Clifton?!!  You can even take a stroll to Camps Bay.  In the morning you'll see all the beautiful people running, cycling, walking and having breakfast at various eateries.  At night, Camps Bay just blossoms into a vibrant mix of music, beautiful people, great food and an incredible vibe.

The apartment itself has an almost magical effect on me.  It would seem that when I step through the door, my stresses and strains, worries and fears just dissolve.  It is decorated in natural, earthy tones and is incredibly calming and peaceful.  I sleep so soundly that it doesn't take long for the batteries to recharge.

I would highly recommend booking a short or long break at this amazing place.  For further information email your inquiry through to cliftonaccom@gmail.com.

Magic in the fynbos....

So recently I was doing a little research about great getaways around the Western Cape - a place to celebrate a very special occasion, a place to completely chill and recharge the old batteries a little.  Yes, I know, it's a lot to ask if you're going away for only one night!  I stumbled upon a little piece of magic....Kol Kol Mountain Lodge in Botrivier.  They have an awesome website, but no picture in any of the galleries really does justice to what you find when you arrive there!

You follow the signs to your cabin, a trek through beautiful mountainous fynbos on a rather rough road - hence their warning of "no low profile tyres".  I had booked in the Sugarbush Cabin and what an awesome cabin it is.  I was told that the key would be in the door when we got there as they have no reception or office as such.  We didn't interact with another human being while we were there except a great, big friendly smile from a chap coming down the hill in his bakkie.  I think he was responsible for ensuring that our Traveling Tub was heated for us when we arrived!

What greeted us beyond the front door was just magical.  A stone and wood cabin, spotlessly clean, cosy and beautiful.

There is an indoor hearth, a kitchenette with everything you need - gas two plate hob, small oven, microwave, fridge - and then they even stock your kitchen with a bottle of delicious sparkling wine, two Ferero Rocher chocolates, butter, milk, bottled water, tea, Rooibos, sugar, coffee and 6 eggs.  There is washing up liquid too.

The awesomeness continues around the partition where you find a beautiful, comfy bed with pure cotton sheets.  Around the next partition you find a stunning victorian bath with amazing upcycled taps, a basin on a log pedestal and a loo of course.  Luxury toilet paper as well as hand wash and hand cream are supplied too.
The bath has a view over the fynbos - just stunning!

There is a sliding door that leads from the living area onto a delightful wooden deck.  And it is here that you find the Traveling Tub!  Oh what an absolute delight.  It is heated by fire and it is pure bliss!  The perfect place to enjoy the sparkling wine and make a toast to a long and happy marriage!
There is something truly magical about sitting in this hot tub, in total privacy, enjoying a glass of ice cold sparkling wine while admiring the vast expanse of fynbos stretching out in front of you.

At the end of the deck there is an outdoor shower - again made from upcycled materials.  It was an awesome experience showering out in nature!

So after a long soak in the tub, a braai fire was lit and some good old South African beef was braaied.  A delightful dinner was had - steak and salad, great wine, great company in an absolutely idyllic place.

Coffee followed on the wooden deck...
What an amazing evening!  I slept like a log and awoke to a still warm Traveling Tub.  Sitting in the hot water on a chilly, overcast early morning - now that's the way to start your day!  I would recommend Kol Kol Mountain Lodge without hesitation and I can assure you, I will be back! The only negative thing I can say is that I wanted to stay for much longer!

Date night....Indian style!

So it's been a while since I did this dating thing!  I am not sure if there are rules that govern this, e.g. a date has to take place on a weekend, or that it follows a certain routine...drinks, dinner, movie, or whatever.  So it's a Tuesday night and I guess we're celebrating the fact that Monday has been dealt with, work was done and the gym session undertaken with a fair amount of vigour;  Tuesday has been tackled and a productive day was had.  We found ourselves alone....our two sons both out for the night.  What to do?

Well now, there is this Indian restaurant in town called Moksh that has a pretty good reputation.  No, actually, it has a great reputation and we've been wanting to sample this infamous North Indian cuisine for some time.  I booked a table for two and looked forward to the dinner date all day!  I Whatsapped the husband and asked him to put the bottle of Poker Hill Frizzante in the fridge to chill as I thought it would be absolutely awesome with curry.  He replied saying that he had done that already!  I was really impressed...that was until I discovered there was no Frizzante in our fridge.  Puzzled I inquired as to why he said he already put it in the fridge...and with spell checker and a bit of misunderstanding, he thought I'd wanted him to put the chicken back in the fridge that we'd taken out the freezer for supper.  Bwahahaha!!!  From now on I can bet that chicken will be known as Frizzante ..one of those quirky things that happen in our household!

Interesting Chair
Candle Light
We arrived at Moksh on time only to find they had no record of my booking!  Fortunately they could accommodate us anyway and we were shown to a table in the corner.  The decor is quite dark and the chairs unusual but comfortable.  The lighting is extremely dim and thus the menu is near impossible to read!  By shifting the romantic little tea-light candle around on the table, we were able to decipher the menu.  Lamb Rogan Josh and Chicken Madras was ordered with sides of garlic naan bread and lacha paratha, along with riata.  The curry was ordered "medium" on the heat scale.  We got a big bowl of ice to chill our lukewarm Frizzante!

While we awaited our food, we were given a foil-lined basket with papadums to nibble on.  These were crispy and flavoured with cumin seeds.  The restaurant was buzzing with almost all the tables full of happy, eating, drinking humans.

Our food arrived.  Wow!  What a spread!  With our order we also received a bowl of complimentary rice.  The food was excellent - with just the right amount of "heat" and incredibly tasty.  All the flavours blending beautifully and I must say, the Frizzante was an excellent choice with the curry.  We had no starters and no dessert - there was just no space!

What a lovely date night!  Great food and even better company!  If you're ever in Somerset West, and North Indian cuisine is your thing, you really need to visit Moksh in Victoria Street.

What is this romance thing they speak of?

So, I ask you, what is romance?  Is it a girly thing?  Is it something that only certain guys know of? Is it part of ones personality?  Perhaps it is something that is only required during those crazy days of new love...you know those days of butterflies in the tummy, shaky hands and silly smiles...the days before the "M" word....eish....marriage!!

Now let me tell you that I am Gemini.  I'm telling you this as perhaps some sort of excuse as to why I have these two opposites in my personality.   There is that totally left-brained, logical part of me that says romance schmomance, and then there is that eccentric, creative side that is pathetically romantic.  I have always told people that my husband "isn't the romantic type"  and "I knew this before I married him" and various other excuses!  I've always been the one to organise surprise nights away - which believe me takes a lot of effort when you have two small kids and a full time job - dinner dates, weekends away, special anniversary dates, birthday surprises, etc, etc.  I eventually got to a point where I just didn't really do this anymore.  I figured that if it was okay for him to be an "unromantic" then it was okay for me too.

After 25.5 years of marriage, I suggested that perhaps we should turn this wheel and go back to the beginning and start dating again.  Well, I was so pleasantly surprised!  I've been taken on dates, and I've even had a beautiful red rose delivered to me at work.  When I explained to a friend that this was huge because my husband was "not a romantic", he said that that was utter nonsense.  He said that being a romantic is simply a matter of choice.  It's choosing to put in some effort and reaping the rewards of course!  Well, that just inspired me to write this blog entry because that is truly what being romantic is....it's a conscious choice.

...Time for Change...

So what started off as essentially a fitness blog tracking my progress after I'd joined the gym, may now just grow into something far more varied.

At the suggestion of a dear friend...and may I add, a brilliant suggestion and a VERY dear friend... this blog is about to diversify!  Yeah baby!

It's time for change!  There is so much random "stuff" that I want to write about and I find myself thinking "ooooh no I can't put THAT on my FITNESS blog".  So we're going to move away from the pure gym oriented "stuff"  and we're going to write about anything we wish...I am of course referring to the royal we!!

Sunset over Cape Town....stunning!

Yes...it says "Ass Cakes"!!!!

Very blessed to have this girl as a friend and colleague!

So people...watch this space....

I got a huge surprise....from myself!!!

Isn't life just crazy sometimes?!  You know if you had told me six months ago that I would be bitten, and bitten hard, by the trail-running bug, I would've openly laughed out loud in your face!  Me!  Run! In the mountains!  Ai wena!!  No my friend...firstly, running is boring, secondly, I just can't run...I feel like I am dying after about 50 metres, and thirdly, I don't have that graceful stride when I attempt to run...I look more like a rhino!  So one day I'm going for a walk through the vineyards with friends and I'm thinking, mmmmm, this is so pretty, it wouldn't be bad to actually take a little jog through here and take in all the beauty that surrounds us.  Then a couple of months later I do a walk with a friend again and I realize that this trail running thing is calling me.  Trotting through all the amazing natural beauty we have around the Cape can only be wonderful.  So I'm convinced to enter the Spur Cape Winter Trail Series.  I go online and enter all four races in the series...the short ones of course which I was under the impression were no more than 5km each.  Well, turns out they were all just under 10km each - gasp!!  I also had in mind that the series started at the end of July but again I was wrong and see that they start 20 June!  That left me with about two weeks to train.  Another gasp!  Oh man I'm gonna die!!!  I get hold of one of my best friends, someone who has known and supported me in all my craziness for the best part of our lives!  I ask her if she is keen to enter and run with me... and she says yes!  Whoop whoop!  Us two old ducks are going to do this thang!!

The two Old Ducks!!

Well, our first race was 9.15km long.  I had two goals - not to come in last, and not to injure myself.  I attained my goals!  I'm telling you it was the most amazing feeling to finish that race!  It was run at the Paul Cluver Estate in Elgin.  Such magnificent beauty and fairly even dirt road running.  Two killer uphills, but those we just plodded.  We ran where we could and walked where we had to.  It was muddy, and slippery, and awesome!  I felt like superwoman when I was done.  The people, the vibe, the beauty, the exercise, the endorphins, the joy of attaining a goal...just awesome, and the bug had bitten!

I missed the second run of the series which was at the Tygerberg Nature Reserve.  Chatting to fellow runners at the third race, I was rather pleased I had been unable to run that one as they say it was very muddy, very slippery and the hills were super hectic!

The third race in the series was held at the Taal Monument in Paarl.  That race was 7.8km long, but it was more technical than Paul Cluver Estate.  The race started with a long uphill climb then wound through some amazing paths, single track, big obstacles to climb over, and then a long downhill to the finish.  I surprised myself (again!) and ran the entire last 2km non stop, however, by the time I got to the finish my left knee was hurting so badly that I was limping like crazy.  Something to do with downhills that I am doing wrong.  The wonderful thing was that I improved on my time - even though it was shorter than the first race, as I said it was far more technical so I didn't think I would be able to improve my time!  Elation!

The fourth and last race was run in Kleinmond.  That was 8.44km long and took us along the coastline, over a stretch of killer beach sand and then onto the golf course, into the mountain and down and back to the finish again.  I had read some tips for newbies to trail running and one of them was on downhills, lean into the downhill, lengthen your stride and let the momentum pull you down!  I tried this and voila! no knee pain at all!  Again I improved my time!  This was a major surprise to me as I didn't feel strong on the day and there were several bottle-necks where the race came to a stand still. I was absolutely ecstatic to receive my series medal.  One had to run at least three of the four races in order to receive a medal and I had achieved this!

So here I am on the other side of three trail runs, having survived, having loved every minute, having received my medal and having surprised the living daylights out of myself!  Life is short people...go out there and surprise yourselves!
